The Western Illinois cross country teams participated in the "Gold" Races at the Joe Piane Invite held at Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana, on September 29, 2023.
Logan Lommel led the Leathernecks with a ninth-place finish. He completed the five-mile race in 24 minutes and 37.5 seconds, averaging 4:55 per mile. Robert Perry followed with a time of 25 minutes and 15.4 seconds, while Logan Beckmier finished in 25 minutes and 40.7 seconds. Isaiah Moorman and Sean Hudspath rounded out the top five scoring positions for the team.
"I was happy with our performances this week," Lommel said. "Personally, the effort was there during the race but my execution can be improved. As a team, we are taking lessons and learning from each race. We had some great individual performance and personal records."
On the women's side, Aylana Cezar placed 59th out of 161 runners in the five-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes and 41.3 seconds. Freshmen Meg Simmons and Lydia Bennett were close behind her by nine and sixteen seconds respectively. Aurora Dominguez and Maleigha Huston completed the top five scoring spots for their team.
Coach Trey Brokaw commented on the team's performance saying, "I was really impressed with Logan Lommel's finish; Robert Perry and Isaiah Moorman had significant personal bests to be proud of." He also noted strong performances from Aurora Dominguez and Hannah Steinmeyer on the women's side but acknowledged that improvements are needed before upcoming competitions.
The Leathernecks will next compete at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Illinois on October 13, 2023.
