The Western Illinois women's tennis team began their season with a weekend split in Galesburg. On Saturday, the Leathernecks faced Illinois State and were defeated 6-1. However, they bounced back on Sunday with a narrow victory over IUPUI, winning 4-3.

In the match against IUPUI, the doubles teams of Paige Grice and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza, along with Agatha Carbonell and Anna-Evelina Trush, secured victories to earn the Leathernecks the doubles point. Both pairs won their matches with identical scores of 6-4.

The singles matches saw both teams win three each, which ultimately gave WIU the overall victory. Grice triumphed in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3. Rossetto Diniz de Souza faced a tougher challenge but emerged victorious after a tiebreaker, finishing her match at 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Trush clinched the win for Western Illinois by winning her singles match in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 7-6.

On Saturday's encounter against Illinois State, Trush was the only player from WIU to secure a win as she claimed victory by default.

Looking ahead, Western Illinois will be traveling for two matches next week against Cincinnati and Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday respectively.
