Western Illinois University's men's basketball team secured a 73-46 victory against Monmouth College at Western Hall. The Leathernecks displayed balanced scoring, strong defense, and effective rebounding to achieve their third win of the season. They led 30-14 at halftime and maintained their lead in the second half with a 43-32 scoreline.
Ryan Myers led all scorers with 19 points, making five out of eleven three-point attempts. Marko Maletic contributed 14 points off the bench, including three three-pointers. Julius Rollins added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kayden Carter scored nine points and collected nine rebounds. Tay Knox also made significant contributions with six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
The Leathernecks' defense forced 14 turnovers from Monmouth, converting them into 13 points. They recorded eight steals and five blocks with contributions from Knox and Sean Smith among others. Western Illinois dominated the boards by out-rebounding Monmouth 45-27, including securing 18 offensive rebounds that resulted in 21 second-chance points.
The team's bench played a crucial role by adding 37 points to the scoreboard. Their transition game was effective as they scored 17 fast-break points.
With this win, Western Illinois improves its record to 3-3 for the season. The team will travel south for two upcoming games against South Alabama on November 26th at 7 p.m., followed by Incarnate Word on November 27th at 5 p.m.
