Western Illinois tennis team ends regular season with mixed results

The Western Illinois women's tennis team concluded its regular season with two matches over the weekend. On Friday, they faced Lindenwood in Macomb, followed by a match against SIUE in Edwardsville on Saturday.

During the Senior Day match against Lindenwood, the Leathernecks were defeated 5-2. Senior Aina Cortina-Pou secured a victory in her final home court appearance, winning after a third set tiebreaker. She overcame an initial setback to win 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (11-9). Cortina-Pou was behind in the second set but managed to force a tiebreaker and ultimately won by scoring the last two points.

Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza also achieved a win through a tiebreaker. Despite losing her first set 1-6, she came back strongly to win the next two sets 6-0 and 6-2.

Maria Rybka went into a third set tiebreaker as well but lost after winning her first set with scores of 6-4, 4-6, and 0-1.

In doubles play against Lindenwood, Western Illinois competed closely but was swept in all three sets.

On Saturday, Western Illinois finished their regular season with a comprehensive 7-0 loss to SIUE. The Cougars won all three doubles matches for an early point advantage and proceeded to sweep WIU in singles play across six matches.

The Leathernecks are now preparing for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament where they will face SIUE again on Friday at noon.
