The Leathernecks faced a challenging match in Milwaukee, resulting in their largest loss of the season. On Sunday, they were defeated 4-0 by the Horizon League's Milwaukee team, extending their winless streak against this opponent to ten matches.
Throughout the game, Western struggled offensively, managing only two shots compared to Milwaukee's 29. Freshman midfielder Alanna Pennington had an opportunity in the first half but was thwarted by Milwaukee's goalkeeper. Senior Sydnee Sagal also attempted a shot on goal in the second half but was unsuccessful.
Milwaukee established control early with a goal in the 7th minute and added another in the 32nd minute to secure a 2-0 lead. A penalty kick before halftime extended their advantage to 3-0. In the second half, another penalty kick increased their lead to four goals, sealing their victory.
Due to high temperatures at kickoff reaching 90 degrees, Western utilized numerous substitutions throughout the match. Twenty players participated, with no single player completing all 90 minutes; junior Emmy Ellington exited for the first time at the 89th minute.
Following this defeat, Western's record stands at 1-3-1 for the season. They are set to return home for a match against Green Bay on Thursday at John Mackenzie Alumni Field and will soon begin conference play by hosting SEMO on September 21 for their inaugural OVC matchup of the year.
