Adams sets records as Western Illinois excels at Jimmy Grant Invitational

Western Illinois University had a successful day at the Jimmy Grant Invitational in Iowa City, with standout performances from its track and field athletes. Aliyah Adams led the team by setting two new records for the Leathernecks. She broke Penny Sellers' 40-year-old record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.64 seconds and set a new program mark in the long jump with a leap of 6.1 meters.

In the pole vault event, Arnie Grunert claimed victory on the men's side with a best effort of 5.05 meters, while Emma Ponx achieved a personal record by clearing 3.66 meters to win on the women's side.

Alessandro Belluz excelled in multiple events, winning the men's high jump by clearing two meters. He also secured second place in the triple jump with a distance of 13.97 meters and third place in the long jump with a leap of 6.73 meters.

Passion Crews added to Western Illinois' success by winning the women's 400-meter race with a time of 57.93 seconds.

Other notable performances included Malachi Barendilla's third-place finish in both the men's 60m Premier (6.97) and men's 200 Premier (22.39). Jaiden Young finished just ahead of Barendilla in second place for the men's 200 Premier with a time of 22.13 seconds.

The women's 400-meter race saw Leatherneck dominance as Crews, Zwandi Harrison (1:00.47), and Temira Goods (1:02.66) took first, second, and third places respectively.

Logan Lommel finished third in the one-mile run with a time of 4:16.52, while Mia Harris and Karlie Zumstein tied for third place in the women's high jump with clearances of 1.5 meters each.

Western Illinois will take a break before returning to Iowa City for their next competition at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on January 20.
