The Western Illinois men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete in the Cougar Classic at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) this Saturday. The event will see field events commencing at 11 a.m., followed by track events at noon.

In their previous outings, the Leathernecks made an impressive start to the outdoor season. They participated in the Washington University Distance Carnival on March 29, with Logan Lommel setting a new program record in the 3000 steeplechase, clocking in at 8:58.10. Maleigha Huston secured eighth place in the 800 meters, while Aylana Cezar finished tenth in the women's 3000 steeplechase.

The following day at the ISU Redbird Challenge, the WIU women's team achieved a second-place finish overall, while the men's team placed fourth. Notable performances included Jasmine Stokes winning the women's hammer throw and Aliyah Adams securing victories in both the long jump and triple jump. Emma Ponx contributed with a second-place finish in the women's pole vault.

Leatherneck athletes have started to appear prominently on the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) top performances list. Aliyah Adams leads with her long jump distance of 19 feet, 2.75 inches and holds fifth place in triple jump with a mark of 39-7.25. On the track side, Logan Lommel's and Aylana Cezar's steeplechase times, along with Maleigha Huston's performance in the 800 meters and newcomer Sophia Myers' time in the 100 hurdles, are leading figures within OVC rankings.

Isaac Jones is ranked fifth in the conference for his performance in the 800 meters, Emma Ponx is second for women's pole vaults, and Jasmine Stokes ranks third for her hammer throw.

Senior Logan Lommel was recognized as OVC Co-Outdoor Male Track Athlete of the Week following his record-setting performance at WashU. His time places him among the top 60 nationally for the 3000 steeplechase while holding top honors within OVC.

Next weekend, Western Illinois will compete at Iowa City during the Musco Twilight Meet hosted by Iowa University.
