Western Illinois University's pole vaulter, Arnie Grunert, achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday night by qualifying for the NCAA National Meet in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for June 5. The sophomore not only set a new school record but also became the first male athlete from WIU to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in pole vaulting.
Grunert's performance was marked by a strong start as he cleared his initial three heights on the first attempts. In the fourth round, he attempted to break the program record at 17 feet, 5.5 inches but fell short initially. However, he succeeded on his second attempt, maintaining his chance to compete nationally.
In the subsequent round, Grunert aimed for another record at 17-9.25. Despite missing his first try, he managed to clear this height and secure both a new program record and his place in the national competition.
While Grunert celebrated his success, WIU's Toriano Tate concluded his season without qualifying in the long jump event held on the same night.
The NCAA West Region events continue with Renee Raglin competing in the long jump on Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by Aliyah Adams pursuing her national aspirations in the triple jump on Saturday at 6 p.m.
