Western Illinois University achieved a narrow 63-61 victory over Central Arkansas at Western Hall. The Leathernecks faced challenges in the first half, shooting 31% from the floor and only 14.3% from three-point range. Sean Smith and Ryan Myers each scored five points in the first half, with Smith also adding two assists.
Despite trailing 28-23 at halftime, Western Illinois made a strong comeback in the second half, scoring 40 points to secure the win. Ryan Myers contributed significantly with 13 points, including three three-pointers and crucial free throws in the final moments. Sean Smith ended the game with an impressive stat line of 17 points, four assists, six rebounds, and five steals.
Julius Rollins added eight points and three rebounds to support his team, while Tay Knox's defensive efforts were crucial as he secured seven rebounds and nine points. Knox made a decisive play by blocking a Central Arkansas shot in the last seconds of the game, leading to a foul that allowed Myers to clinch the win for WIU.
The Leathernecks excelled defensively by forcing 13 turnovers throughout the game and converting these opportunities into 15 points. They committed only nine personal fouls compared to Central Arkansas's 18 and capitalized on fast breaks with 11 points.
Western Illinois improved their shooting performance in the second half to 48% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. The team will now travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for their next game against Northern Iowa on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
