Western Illinois University's men's basketball team faced a setback in their final game of the Jaguar Classic, losing to Incarnate Word with a score of 86-75. The Leathernecks showed moments of strength but struggled against UIW's effective offense, especially in the second half.
In the first half, Western Illinois kept the competition close, trailing by just three points at halftime with a score of 35-32. Key players Marko Maletic, Ryan Myers, and Kayden Carter each contributed eight points during this period. However, the second half saw Incarnate Word pull ahead by outscoring Western Illinois 51-43. Defensive challenges for WIU included allowing 44 points in the paint and conceding 22 points from turnovers.
Maletic was a standout performer for Western Illinois, leading all scorers with 23 points. He demonstrated his shooting ability by making three three-pointers and successfully converting 10 out of 11 free throws. Carter added to the team's efforts with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Julius Rollins scored 11 points. Contributions from the bench were significant as well, totaling 30 points led by Maletic and Trey Deveaux who scored six points along with Kiyron Powell's single free throw.
On defense, Western Illinois secured 30 rebounds with Carter and Tay Knox playing pivotal roles. Knox also made an impact defensively with three blocks; however, the team's effectiveness was diminished by committing 17 turnovers and facing foul trouble, notably Sean Smith fouling out.
Despite this defeat, Western Illinois showed determination and potential strengths such as drawing fouls effectively and excelling at free-throw shooting (24-of-28). This result leaves WIU with an even record of four wins and four losses.
The Leathernecks are set to return home for their next game against Saint Ambrose on Wednesday night at Western Hall. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
