Western Illinois Women's Basketball team secured a decisive 92-63 victory over Morehead State at Johnson Arena in Morehead, Kentucky. The Leathernecks improved their record to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), while Morehead State fell to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The game was marked by Western Illinois' strong performance, as they led throughout and outscored the Eagles in every quarter. The Leathernecks scored 31 points in the first quarter, establishing a significant lead by holding Morehead State to just 15 points. Western Illinois demonstrated a strong inside game with 48 points in the paint and dominated the boards with a 45-29 rebounding advantage. Their defense also contributed by converting turnovers into 12 points, while keeping their own turnovers relatively low at 15 compared to Morehead State's 11.
Raegan McCowan led all scorers, matching her season-high with 35 points on an efficient shooting performance of 15-of-21 from the field. She added 11 rebounds to secure her sixth double-double of the season. McCowan showed versatility with her scoring ability both inside and outside, hitting a three-pointer and making all four of her free throw attempts.
Mallory McDermott added valuable contributions with 14 points, including three shots from beyond the arc, while playing a key role in transition plays. Addi Brownfield was instrumental for Western Illinois, contributing across various facets of the game with 14 points, nine assists, and five rebounds. Mia Nicastro also made an impact with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Defensively, Western Illinois limited Morehead State to just 37% shooting from the field. Harley Paynter was the leading scorer for Morehead State with 19 points; however, the rest of the team struggled against Western Illinois' aggressive defensive tactics.
The Leathernecks displayed unselfish play through their ball movement, registering a total of 24 assists as a team. This victory brings them closer to achieving a .500 record in conference play as they prepare for their upcoming game against Southern Indiana on Saturday at 1 p.m.
