Western Illinois University's women's golf team concluded their participation in the Rust Buster Match Play Tournament, marking the start of their spring season. The event took place in Clermont, Florida, where the team faced opponents from Omaha, Akron, and Northern Iowa.
In the first round of competition, Olivia Kerr delivered a notable performance with three birdies but was unable to secure a win as she ended four down with three holes remaining. Three matches for Western Illinois came down to the final hole. Mia Scrimgeour finished her round with a score of 77 after bogeying the last hole. Gabriela Galindo Rubio was tied going into her final hole and parred it for an opening score of 77; however, her opponent's birdie led to a loss. Sophia Thorne also had a close match but ended one down after bogeying the last hole, finishing with a score of 78.
During the second round against Akron, Abby Hunter managed to make par on twelve out of seventeen holes and achieved one birdie on hole 16. In the third round against Northern Iowa, Olivia McCrystal secured a victory by winning her match by one hole after shooting an 82 and making a decisive birdie on the par-three 17th hole.
The scores from each round were: Omaha defeated WIU 6-0 in round one; Akron overcame WIU 6-0 in round two; Northern Iowa won against WIU 5-1 in round three.
The Leathernecks are scheduled to return to action next Wednesday for a scrimmage against Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas.
