Western Illinois University's baseball team faced a tough challenge against Alabama State, resulting in a 9-7 defeat on Sunday afternoon. The Leathernecks, now with a record of 2-6, initially struggled but managed to gain momentum with a four-run fifth inning. Tyler Large contributed an RBI single, and Paul Osting added a bunt single, giving WIU a 4-2 lead during the top of the fifth inning. Justin Bogard's RBI single and Trevor Leon's sacrifice bunt further extended WIU's lead to 6-2.

Tyler Large had an impressive performance at the plate, achieving three hits in four at-bats, scoring two runs, and driving in one run. Kyree Alexander also played well under pressure, contributing three RBIs with two hits.

Pitcher Frederick Romano began strong for the Leathernecks by striking out six batters over six innings while allowing only three runs. Despite keeping Alabama State (5-7) contained early on, Romano faced difficulties as the Hornets' offense gained strength later in the game. Alabama State scored consistently in the sixth and seventh innings before securing their victory with four runs in the eighth inning.

Although WIU did not win, their offense showed promise with ten hits and commendable performances from players like Large and Alexander. The Leathernecks are set to recover from this loss as they prepare for their home opener against Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
