Western Illinois University's pole vaulter Arnie Grunert has made headlines by securing the third-highest mark in the NCAA this season. Grunert, a junior, achieved the feat during the Normal Invite in Bloomington, Illinois by clearing 5.53 meters (18 feet, 1.75 inches), consequently setting a new school record.

This performance not only clinched a first-place finish for Grunert at the meet but also marked a noteworthy milestone in his athletic journey. In the 2024 season, Grunert received the title of Honorable Mention All-American after a tie for 17th place at the NCAA National Outdoor Meet in Eugene, Oregon.

Coach Tom Unruh commented on Grunert's achievement, stating, "Arnie did a great job vaulting in the meet Saturday at ISU. He broke the school record twice during the meet. His highest jump of 5.53 m ranks him 3rd in the NCAA Division I level. He knows he can jump higher. He will continue to work hard and have fun doing that." He added, "The goal is to jump his best at the end of the season. His teammates, the track coaching staff, and our Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott have all been an important part in Arnie's success as a vaulter."

Looking ahead, Grunert and the Leathernecks are set to compete at the Kansas Relays starting Thursday, April 17.
