Arnie Grunert, a pole vaulter, has set a new school record at the Gary Wieneke Memorial meet in Champaign, Illinois. Grunert achieved a vault of 5.65 meters, surpassing his previous record and securing the No. 2 ranking in the nation.
Grunert's performance was notable at Illinois' track and field event, impressing both spectators and fellow athletes. "I felt good out there," Grunert commented on his achievement. "I'm excited for what's ahead. There's still a lot to improve."
When questioned about his expectations for the vault, he said, "No, it felt easy and expected, but I really enjoyed the process." He attributed his success to teamwork and coaching: "My teammates were a big contribution. Coach Tom, Nino and I talk a lot about technique, staying confident, taking accountability, and being willing to be coached. Most of all, staying humble."
Pole Vault coach Tom Unruh praised Grunert's dedication: "On Friday Arnie went to the University of Illinois to vault against 3 18+ vaulters. He vaulted good and came away with a first place finish with another school record of 5.65m, 18'6.5". He continues to work hard to get better."
With postseason competitions approaching, Grunert is well-positioned for the NCAA Championships.
