Western Illinois University’s men’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Northern Kentucky on Sunday at Northwest Field. The Leathernecks, now holding a 1-3-0 record, created several scoring opportunities but were unable to convert.
In the first half, Ty Duax had a chance to put Western Illinois ahead with a penalty kick in the 25th minute. His shot was stopped by Northern Kentucky goalkeeper Alex Kron. The only goal of the match came in the 74th minute when Ali Taleb scored from inside the box for Northern Kentucky, which improved its record to 2-1-0.
Western Illinois increased its offensive pressure late in the game, earning seven corner kicks after halftime and forcing multiple saves from Kron. Both Ryan Wrobleski and Maksim Palisak registered shots on target during this period.
Leatherneck goalkeeper Micah Ramirez made seven saves, five of them coming in the first half, helping keep his team within reach throughout the contest.
The match featured physical play from both sides, with a combined total of 23 fouls and six yellow cards issued.
Western Illinois will continue its homestand Thursday with a game against Bradley.
