Western Illinois University's men's basketball team is set to play two games on the road this week, facing CSU Bakersfield and Cal Baptist. The Leathernecks will take on CSU Bakersfield at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, California, on Tuesday, November 11 at 8:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against Cal Baptist at the Fowler Events Center in Riverside, California, on Friday, November 14 at 9:30 p.m.
In their most recent game, Western Illinois faced Iowa and lost 77–58 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Graduate forward Isaiah Griffin led the Leathernecks with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including two three-pointers and five rebounds. Tyran Cook contributed 10 points and two assists, while Antwaun Massey and Francis Okwuosah each added eight points.
The Leathernecks started strong against Iowa with early scores from Cook and Griffin but were overtaken after Iowa responded with a 10–0 run. At halftime, Iowa led 41–33. In the second half, Western Illinois struggled offensively, shooting only 27 percent as Iowa's defense created turnovers and disrupted their rhythm. Iowa guard Bennett Stirtz scored 24 points with seven assists for the Hawkeyes.
Western Illinois was outrebounded by Iowa (29–26) and committed 14 turnovers that resulted in 24 points for their opponent.
A notable change in Western Illinois' lineup saw Isaiah Griffin move into the starting group against Iowa. He delivered a strong performance with his scoring and rebounding efforts.
Looking ahead to CSU Bakersfield, the Roadrunners have begun their season with a record of one win and one loss. They were defeated by California but secured a home victory over Whittier. Rebounding has been an early strength for CSU Bakersfield; CJ Hardy scored 17 points in their win over Whittier while Ron Jessamy recorded a double-double.
Against Cal Baptist, Western Illinois will focus on limiting their opponent's efficiency both offensively and defensively. Cal Baptist has started its season undefeated through two games due to strong rebounding and balanced scoring. Guard Dominique Daniels Jr. leads their backcourt.
The upcoming games offer Western Illinois opportunities to secure its first win of the season while working toward improved team cohesion.
