Western Illinois University's men's basketball team secured its first win of the season on Monday night at Western Hall, defeating Coe College 74–63. After trailing 36–34 at halftime, the Leathernecks outscored the Kohawks 40–27 in the second half.
The team shot 49 percent from the field and recorded 40 points in the paint. They also forced 16 turnovers, which resulted in 21 points.
Lucas Lorenzen led Western Illinois with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals over 35 minutes. Goanar Biliew contributed off the bench with 13 points on five-of-six shooting. Francis Okwuosah added 11 points and nine rebounds, including three successful three-point shots. Isaiah Griffin had nine points and seven rebounds. The bench scored a total of 29 points.
Defensively, Western Illinois limited Coe College to ten made field goals and forced eight turnovers in the second half.
With this victory, Western Illinois improves to a record of 1–4 for the season. The Leathernecks will next play against Coastal Carolina at home on Friday at 6 p.m.
