Western Illinois University announced that Dr. Eric Johnson, the men's soccer head coach and the most successful in the program's history, will retire after 29 years with the Leathernecks.
Johnson led Western Illinois to six NCAA Tournament appearances, four regular-season conference titles, and six conference tournament championships. His teams competed in the Mid-Continent Conference, the Summit League, and more recently, the Ohio Valley Conference. Over his career, Johnson was named Conference Coach of the Year five times. He also served as head coach for WIU's women's soccer team from 2016 to 2021.
"The decision to step down was really hard," Johnson said. "I still have a love for the game and for coaching. That made the decision tough, but I know this is the right time."
Director of Athletics Paul Bubb commented on Johnson’s impact: "For 29 seasons Coach Johnson has led this program, and led it very successfully, EJ has completed our transition into the Ohio Valley Conference with two conference tournament appearances and has the program positioned for continued success. His leadership will be missed."
Johnson plans to continue supporting Leatherneck soccer in a volunteer capacity while spending more time with his grandchildren and pursuing hobbies such as hunting, fishing, and woodworking.
