The Western Illinois University men's soccer team lost 3-1 to Eastern Illinois University in a match played on Saturday afternoon in Macomb, Illinois.
Western Illinois started the game strong, with junior forward Xavier Gagnon scoring five minutes into the first half to give his team an early lead. Eastern Illinois equalized late in the first half when fifth-year senior midfielder Ben Griffis scored in the 41st minute, sending both teams into halftime tied at 1-1.
After halftime, Eastern Illinois increased their offensive pressure and outshot Western Illinois 12-3 in the second half. The Panthers capitalized on their opportunities by scoring two more goals, securing a 3-1 victory over the Leathernecks.
With this loss, Western Illinois now has a record of 3 wins, 10 losses, and 4 draws overall and stands at 1 win, 2 losses, and 5 draws in conference play. Eastern Illinois improves its season record to 4 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws overall and is now at an even .500 with a conference record of 3 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws. Western Illinois will next play against SIUE Cougars in Edwardsville on Thursday October 30th at 6 p.m.
